What to see exactly – Part 1: Collegiate church & Cloister + Cardinal Palace and Great Wall

1. The Collegiate Church and its Cloister

a. The Collegiate Church

Built between the 12th and the 15th centuries, the Collegiate church is one of the most imposing churches in Gironde. It hosted a college of Canons, who lived following the rule of Saint Augustine until the French revolution. In Ancient Greek “Kanôn” means “the rule”.
The construction started in 1110 at the request……

Northern Gate: this part was added later, when the chanons became secular monks… being allowed to live in the “outside world”, with public people. Therefore they had direct access to the village.

Roman Architecture

Some of the most important characteristics of Roman architecture include arches, columns and the use of marble and limestone. Roman architects were heavily influenced by early Greek architects, particularly in their use of Doric, Corinthian and Ionic columns.

b. The Cloister

This cloister of the 14th century forms a square of thirty meters square whose galleries are covered with a wooden frame. 

From the garden, the Canons could go in all the other buildings………….

PLAN YOUR GUIDED TOUR in JANUARY:

2 hour guided tours in English. Mainly available on Saturdays. (however can be arranged during the week if required).

80€ per person for a 2 hour guided Tour of Saint-Emilion (Medieval village/UNESCO World Heritage Site/Information on Monolithe church/Wines, etc) – Minimum of 2 people to confirm the visit (maximum of 6 people)
